#AfricasBiggestBookProject Narrator Spotlight: Zeal Akaraiwe

Zeal Akaraiwe left banking in 2014 and set up Graeme Blaque Advisory, a financial advisory outfit focusing on risk management using derivatives. Zeal holds a B.Sc in Actuarial Science from the University of Lagos. He currently has over 14 years banking experience and joined Standard Chartered in 2004 prior to which he had spent over 5 years working in 3 other banks, spanning HR and Admin to Corporate Banking.

After joining Standard Chartered Nigeria Treasury in 2004, he moved on to work in Standard Chartered London in early 2006 on the Africa Structuring desk where he focused on structuring of derivative transactions for the bank’s footprint in Africa, and these transactions covered interest rate, commodity and foreign exchange derivatives. In mid 2007, he moved to act as the Head of the Sales team in Standard Chartered Zambia and then returned to Nigeria in 2008, to first head Financial Institutions Sales and then the combined Financial Markets Sales team.

The roles in London, Zambia and Nigeria of structuring OTC derivatives solutions for clients required a deep understanding of client requirement and strategy, ensuring that the solutions were client appropriate as well as aligning with the bank’s overall intent.

In his time as Sales head, he was involved with numerous “firsts”, both in Standard Chartered Africa and in the Financial Markets space in Nigeria. He was also a key member the SCB Nigeria WBMM (wholesale bank management committee) that drove SCBN’s strategic direction in Nigeria regarding market penetration, customer acquisition and product development.
Effective 2012, for a 2year term, Zeal sat on the governing council of the FMDA Nigeria (Financial Markets Dealers Association) and also heading the derivative committee.
