Briefly: Senators Reject Reduction In Allowance

The consideration of the report of the Senate ad-hoc committee on the review of the finances of the Senate was yesterday suspended over sharp disagreement by Senators.

In a two-hour deliberation behind closed doors, senators resolved to reject the reduction of salaries and allowances as recommended by the Senator James Manager’s committee which was constituted by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki to facilitate the reduction process in the Senators' allowances.

The senators reportedly rebuffed further reduction in the lawmakers budget which was initially reduced from N150 billion annual budget to N120 billion during Senator David Mark Senate Presidency.

In his reactions, Senator Matthew Urhoghide (PDP Edo South) said  “all of us have people in our constituencies and financial requests from them keep piling up on a daily basis...”

After due deliberation, the senate agreed to consult with the House of Representatives and other units that have input in the budget while the recommendations by the panel stay on hold.
