Briefly: Enugu State Approves 3 Weeks Paternity Leave, 6 Months Maternity Leave

The Enugu State Government has disclosed its interest to promote family bonding and also support mother and child care through a new labour policy.

In a statement by the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Sam Ngwu, in Enugu on Wednesday, nursing mothers will now be granted six months maternity leave while husbands whose wives put to bed would be entitled to three weeks paternity leave. The paternity leave is necessary to give such husbands the opportunity to support their nursing wives, according to the state government.

Before now, female workers who gave birth were entitled to three months maternity leave while the men whose wives delivered babies were not exempted from work.

In addition, nursing mothers are free to breast-feed their babies in offices during work hours to engage in the internationally recommended four to six months exclusive breast feeding of newborn babies.
