Briefly: Nigeria National Identity Number Becomes Compulsory From September 2015

The National Identity Number (NIN) shall become a compulsory means of identification for Nigerian citizens for accessing certain transactions within the country as from September 1, 2015 – most government agencies and other service institutions including banks will demand the NIN before rendering such service.
According to the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), which issues NIN, these transactions, pursuant to section 27 (1) and (2) of the NIMC Act, 2007 include application for, and issuance of International Passport, opening of bank accounts, consumer loans, purchase of insurance policies, National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), registration of voters, payment of taxes and pensions etc.
