A Nigerian, Dr. Samuel Achilefu, has received the St. Loius 2014 Award for inventing   a cancer goggle, a device that helps surgeons locate an infected tumor and separate it from healthy tissue during surgical operations.
Achilefu’s invention became very popular when it was first used in a successful breast cancer operation. Achilefu‘s invention has been worn by doctors in 27 surgeries involving breast cancer, liver cancer and melanoma.

He was inspired to reduce the number of the instrument in operation rooms and also promote objectivity during surgical operations.

The St. Louis Award is given each year to honour a resident who has made an "outstanding contribution" to their community.
