Briefly: How To Sell Instagram Pictures And Evade Infringement Charges

Richard Prince, an established artist, did something incredible and totally legal. He took screenshots of gorgeous Instagram pictures uploaded by models, celebrities and artists, and added comments underneath, then printed the images on canvas. Last fall, he exhibited them at the Gagosian Gallery, where they sold for $90,000 each. Yup.

The original Instagrammers CANNOT sue Prince for copyright infringement because Prince edited the photos to include his own comments. The works therefore count as original pieces of art.
